Jozef Mehoffer, I Upadek Chrystusa pod krzyzem [The First Fall of Christ under the Cross], 1935

The First Fall made the greatest impression on me; the figure of Jesus, hanging on the rope as if lassoed, will be always etched in my memory. And the mocking of the Convicted Man, whom other painters – who reproduced the subject for centuries, fully exposing the physical suffering – had at least spared the mirth of the crowd, gathered in the street, amused by the agony of the Victim.
